1978  Educational Psychologist at Dawn House School – a school for specialist language problems

1982 – 1999 Educational Psychologist with Rotherham Borough Council

1999 – July 2013 Child Psychologist with Barnsley PCT, CAMHS [now: South West Yorkshire Foundation Trust]2014 -2016 Working for an Agency with two local authorities

2016-2017 Ed Psychologist, Wakefield MBC

For some 15 years, Ruth wrote Legal Reports usually regarding young people and made Court Appearances when necessary.

Areas of Interest and Expertise

As an Educational Psychologist, Ruth had responsibility for the full range of duties in a full range of   schools [Nursery, Primary, Secondary, MLD, SLD, Behavioural Units]. Ruth worked with all sorts of children, doing intellectual and reading assessments and suggesting teaching programmes as appropriate. Ruth was involved with PHSE, and assisting all children through transitions. Ruth ran projects on Language Development in schools, reading projects, behavioural management, bullying, bereavement. For several years Ruth was Chair of the local DECP and organised meetings and courses.

Within the NHS, as a Child Psychologist, Ruth was especially involved with ASD, ADHD and Tourettes [Developmental Disorders] as well as Learning Disabilities. Ruth had a particular training and responsibility for Trauma and worked with asylum seekers. Also with phobias and anxieties.

Gifted Children: ran a group for 15 years

Bereavement: organised major conferences both within Education and the NHS

Bullying: Organised the first national conference on Bullying in 1991, and much INSET

Gave INSET on Asperger Syndrome and ADHD to schools frequently, as well as on a range of other topics [Circle of Friends, dealing with bereavement, language problems, SLD]

Parenting Group: Ruth ran a number of parenting groups for parents of ‘ordinary’ children as well as for those with disorders – especially ASD and ADHD. Ran groups for parents of difficult and disaffected adolescents. Ran a parenting support group for Health Visitors and School Nurses.

Exam Courses: Private and school courses for students anxious about exams – also general exam preparation.

Offered mentoring when required to some teachers

Ran occasional Consultation Meetings where school staff could ask about non-referred children.

 

I was on the British Psychological Society Press List, and on the BPS Critical Incident Working Party.

I’m an Associate Fellow of the BPS, a Chartered Psychologist and registered with the Health and Care Professions Council. Ruth is DBS checked.

Also: Hypnosis, Emotional Freedom Techniques, Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing.

Designed the Educational Apps WhizzyKids 1 and 2 [for 2-5, 5-7] which has been downloaded almost a million times.

As a matter of interest

I have been on BBC tv several times, twice doing parenting work on BBC Watchdog Health Check as a feature, and on other channels commenting on news items, and on Richard and Judy [then almost a cult programme]. Ruth is in demand for radio programmes.
Ruth was involved in legal cases – eg defending the use of BabyWalkers for a store against a City Council, insurance claims following injury, young men at risk of prison, mothers at risk of losing their child, parents hoping to adopt from abroad.
I was the psychologist used to promote The Oxford Reading Tree books for OUP around the country.
I advised the Department of Transport regarding Road Safety Advertising Campaigns.
